Weed Grasses
Weed Grasses in Surrey
Weed Grasses (Meadow Grasses) like Yorkshire Fog and Poa Annua are often found in domestic lawns. These grasses are light in colour, thick, and grow horizontally. They are very noticeable in early Spring, growing rapidly and producing vast amounts of seed. They are quick to colonise large parts of your lawn and spoil its once-lovely appearance. As we go into Summer they seem to disappear, only to reappear the following Spring.
Wind, birds (bird seed), bad quality seed from stores, shoes, mowers, etc. bring these unwanted grasses into our lawns. Pavements (council grass) are prime hotspots for these grasses as they are easy to maintain and extremely tough.
Because they grow horizontally, cutting with a traditional mower is very difficult

What can be done to control weed grasses?
-
If it's a newly laid lawn (turf), try to dig them out as soon as they appear. Fill the hole with soil and overseed. It's a good idea to get extra seed from the turf suppliers as an off-the-shelf seed might not match your current seed. Another option is to grow a patch of lawn that you can use as a doner lawn, remove the offending grass, and replace it with some doner lawn.
-
Cut the horizontal growth with a knife, thus slowing down its growth and ability to produce seed heads. This can also be done with a scarifier or verticutter.
-
If it's really bad you can look at killing off your lawn and starting again. Keep in mind that seeds will be in the soil and chances are they will reappear the following season. They will however be small and easier to remove.
-
Keep your lawn healthy and thick (overseed) to stop these grasses from getting established.
