Scarification simply refers to the removal of dead grass (thatch), moss, and debris (leaves, twigs etc) from your lawn. This build-up of thatch, moss, and debris chokes your lawn and stops nutrients, water, sunlight, and air from getting to the grass.
Scarification can be done manually (fine for small lawns and really hard work) with a wire rake, or using Mr Lawns latest mechanical equipment that will do the job more efficiently and effectively. The scarifying machines have metal tines that spin really fast, pulling the thatch/moss to the surface. The thatch/moss is then collected and removed allowing your lawn to breathe. Depending on the severity of the thatch/moss layer, your lawn will need time to recover. Sometimes in severe cases, overseeding and topdressing is required to help the lawn recover.
It is recommended that you scarify at least once a year, and scarification is often performed in Spring or Autumn as the milder, wetter weather will allow the lawn to recover more quickly.
Lawn Aeration & Lawn Spiking Services
Aerating your lawn is one of the most important things you can do for your lawn. In my experience, aeration does help with compaction but more importantly, it allows air, nutrients, and moisture to get down deeper into the soil/root layer.
Mr Lawn makes use of the latest aeration machines to punch thousands of holes into the ground.
There are two main types of soil aeration, solid tine aeration, and hollow tine aeration. Depending on the requirements of the lawn, Mr Lawn will recommend which option will be best for your lawn.
Mr Lawn offers lawn aeration and spiking services in Surrey, including Fetcham, Leatherhead, Guildford, Bookham, Cobham, Woking, Oxshott, Clandon, Reigate, Betchworth, Dorking etc...
Weed Control
Dandelion, Common Plantain, Daisy, Creeping Buttercup, Yarrow, and Clover are just some of the common lawn weeds found in UK lawns. Weeds will often make their appearance in Spring, growing rapidly, flowering, and releasing thousands of seeds, ready to germinate the following year.
Weeds if left alone will slowly take over a lawn and the longer they go untreated the more damage they will do to a once beautiful lawn.
You can try digging them out, but if the root remains, the weed will quickly return.
Mr Lawns weed treatments are extremely effective and within a few weeks, most weeds are under control. The weed treatment is absorbed through the leaf of the plant, killing off the leaves and roots. The weed treatment will not damage the grass and it only targets the weeds “Broadleaf Plants”.
Moss Control
Dead moss is fibrous, and unlike dead weeds (which are mostly made up of water), it will not just wither and shrivel away once killed. Instead, it turns into thatch – which does not decompose
Dead moss must be raked and removed from the lawn, and heavy moss may require scarifying or verti-cutting. If dead moss is allowed to stay on the lawn and turn to thatch, it will stop moisture from reaching the grass roots where it is needed. Thatch also creates damp conditions that are ideal for allowing more moss to develop.
Lawns should not be raked / scarified without applying moss control first. You can end up simply spreading the moss spores and making things worse. Be sure to call in an expert to take care of your dead moss for you.

Overseeding
The best defence against weeds is thick, healthy grass. As such, new seed should be introduced to your lawn regularly to replace the ageing plants – this process is called overseeding. Choosing to overseed your lawn has all kinds of benefits, the most prominent being that it can be carried out without you needing to rip up and replace large areas of your existing turf!
If you want your lawn to stay thick and dense, we recommend overseeding at least once every 3 years. Overseeding should be carried out in either autumn or late winter or early spring, ideally after scarification, aeration or top dressing have already taken place. For the best results, use a variety of different seed species.

What is a turf pest?
A turf pest is simply a small creature that lives in your lawn and feeds on your grass and grass roots. They cause significant damage and discolouration and can ultimately kill your lawn if left untreated.
