Lawn scarification is the process of pulling dead moss and thatch out of your garden lawn. This used to be done using a wire rake, but thanks to modern technology, we now use powered machines that get the job done more efficiently and more thoroughly. In the short term, scarifying your grass will actually make your lawn look worse, but once it recovers it should be far healthier than before. Click here for more information on Lawn Scarification.
Aeration & Spiking Service
Compacted ground can have serious consequences for your lawn, but this problem can be easily solved by aerating the soil. Our lawn aerator service is available in Surrey.
Mr Lawn use professional grass aeration machines that move across the surface of the lawn and punch metal spikes (tines) 2-3 inches into the ground. This creates hundreds of tiny holes in the ground and loosens compacted soil. If necessary, hollow tines can be used to pull a soil core out of the ground – this helps to remove troublesome thatch as well as aerating the lawn.
Lawns should be regularly aerated so grass roots can develop healthily. The RHS recommend spiking your lawn every 2-3 years and carrying out hollow tine grass aeration every 3-4 years. Click here for more information on Lawn Aeration.
Weed Control
Weeds can be quick to colonise large parts of your lawn and spoil its once-lovely appearance. Off-the-shelf weed killers may seem effective at first, but unless you address the conditions that allowed for weed growth in the first place, those weeds will soon grow back!

Moss Control
Dead moss is fibrous, and unlike dead weeds (which are mostly made up of water), it will not just wither and shrivel away once killed. Instead, it turns into thatch – which does not decompose
Dead moss must be raked and removed from the lawn, and heavy moss may require scarifying or verti-cutting. If dead moss is allowed to stay on the lawn and turn to thatch, it will stop moisture from reaching the grass roots where it is needed. Thatch also creates damp conditions that are ideal for allowing more moss to develop.
Lawns should not be raked / scarified without applying moss control first. You can end up simply spreading the moss spores and making things worse. Be sure to call in an expert to take care of your dead moss for you.

Overseeding
The best defence against weeds is thick, healthy grass. As such, new seed should be introduced to your lawn regularly to replace the ageing plants – this process is called overseeding. Choosing to overseed your lawn has all kinds of benefits, the most prominent being that it can be carried out without you needing to rip up and replace large areas of your existing turf!
If you want your lawn to stay thick and dense, we recommend overseeding at least once every 3 years. Overseeding should be carried out in either autumn or late winter or early spring, ideally after scarification, aeration or top dressing have already taken place. For the best results, use a variety of different seed species.

What is a turf pest?
A turf pest is simply a small creature that lives in your lawn and feeds on your grass and grass roots. They cause significant damage and discolouration and can ultimately kill your lawn if left untreated.
