Overseeding Tips & Advice

Overseeding Tips & Advice in Surrey

Grass plants don’t live forever. Over time, they deteriorate and their rate of reproduction slows down. Mature lawns often have patches of weak, thin grass, and it’s easy for weeds and moss to colonise these areas.

Overseeding is good way to prevent this from happening and to recover some of the grass thickness that has been lost. What does overseeding mean, you ask? Read on to find out…

What is overseeding?

Let’s cut to the chase – what is overseeding?

The best defence against weeds is thick, healthy grass. As such, new seed should be introduced to your lawn regularly to replace the ageing plants – this process is called overseeding. Choosing to overseed your lawn has all kinds of benefits, the most prominent being that it can be carried out without you needing to rip up and replace large areas of your existing turf!

If you want your lawn to stay thick and dense, we recommend overseeding at least once every 3 years. Overseeding should be carried out in either autumn or late winter or early spring, ideally after scarification, aeration or top dressing have already taken place. For the best results, use a variety of different seed species.

Tips for overseeding your grass:

  • Don’t sow your new seeds in cold weather. Seeds require a ground temperature above 8 °C to germinate, and shoots need several weeks without frost if they are to survive.

  • Hot and dry summer weather isn’t good for overseeding either. Seeds need good soil contact, warmth and moisture – so spring and autumn are ideal germination times.
