Chafer Grub Control

Chafer Grub Control in Surrey

Do you have chafer grubs in your lawn? Want to get the problem under control?

Here at Mr Lawn, we provide a specialist chafer grub control service for outdoor spaces in Surrey.

Chafer grubs are – fortunately – not a huge problem in Surrey due to the heavier clay soils. However, lawns laid on sandy ground may be prone to damage from chafer grubs; the same goes for gardens in sandy light-soil. If your garden is susceptible to chafer grubs, it’s important you keep a close eye on your lawn to spot early signs of an infestation.

Signs of Chafer Grubs in Lawn

  • Brown Areas on Lawn Damaged areas can rapidly increase in size as the lawn grubs continue to eat away at your lawn. In some cases, the damage is so great and so rapid that it is possible to lift entire sections of turf off the ground because the grass roots have become completely disconnected.

  • Birds Looking for Food Birds pecking at your turf may mean that you have a chafer grub infestation. The grubs are a popular food source for birds, and even other types of wildlife like foxes and badgers may be interested in feasting on your lawn’s chafer grubs. Letting predators eat the grubs will not necessarily control their numbers, always seek the help of grub control specialists.

  • Damage to your lawn will increase as the chafer grubs grow larger and increase in numbers over the course of the summer. The lawn grubs prefer sandy soil and will burrow in deeper during periods of cold weather. Keep an eye out for these seasonal patterns.

Grub Control Methods

The appropriate pesticide must be applied by a competent professional.

Acelepryn Application:

Apply preventatively. Acelepryn is only effective on 1st and 2nd instar. Larger grubs / larvae will not be controlled.

Chafers:

ACELEPRYN is a residual insecticide which controls 1st and 2nd instar larvae, larger 3rd instar larvae will not be controlled. The active ingredient in ACELEPRYN can take 3-4 weeks to move into the thatch/soil interface where the grubs feed. Therefore ACELEPRYN should be applied prior to egg hatch to allow time for the product to reach maximum concentration in the grub feeding zone.

Timing

Applications should be made prior to egg hatch to achieve optimum levels of control. This period can normally be anticipated by monitoring for adult beetle. When beetle numbers are at their peak this is when ACELEPRYN should be applied to achieve the best results.

EGG LAYING PERIODS:

Chafer grubs

Egg laying can start in May and can continue right through July. This is dependent on the species present and adult flight periods should be monitored to determine the best period for application. For optimum control apply when peak beetle flight is observed. Later applications may not be effective as egg hatch may have already begun. NOTE: Some chafer species have 2 or 3 year life cycles with overlapping generations. This means there could be 1st instar larvae and mature 3rd instar larvae in the same location. Where this occurs the mature 3rd instar larvae will not be controlled. In these situations it will require 2-3 years of ACELEPRYN use to gain full control of the chafer populations.

Mow prior to application.

Ensure the soil profile is not hydrophobic at the time of application. Wetting agent is advised.

Keep surfaces irrigated where possible, to attract pest larvae to towards the surface.

Delay mowing for as long as possible and return the clippings if feasible.
